Greece Intensifies Fight Against Illegal Gambling
The gambling regulator will recruit 40 enforcement specialists to step up action against black-market sites and online promoters.
Greece intensifies its fight against illegal online gambling and betting, with the Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP) hiring experts for 40 positions in its expanded Inspection and Enforcement division.
The move follows legislation adopted in June to increase the regulator’s staffing and investigative powers. In his speech on October 6, Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis estimated that illegal gambling had generated around €1.8bn in 2025. The activity involved approximately 900,000 people.
The new framework introduces prison sentences of at least 10 years and fines of up to €800,000 for serious offences. Authorities have also filed complaints against 18 influencers accused of promoting illegal gambling online, with the cases under preliminary investigation.
The government plans to use digital tools and AI to identify illegal websites, trace promotional activity and investigate networks behind unlicensed operations. The Hellenic Gaming Commission maintains a blacklist of unlicensed gambling providers as part of its enforcement work.
