Google Expands YouTube Gambling Ads
Beginning Oct. 21, Google will permit certified online gambling advertisers to run ads in one of YouTube’s most prominent ad placements, provided they comply with legal and age restrictions.
The platform will allow certified online gambling advertisers to run campaigns in its Masthead ad placement, expanding an existing allowance for sports betting.
Google announced the change on October 7 in its official advertising policy update. The Masthead is the prominent advertising slot at the top of the YouTube homepage.
To qualify, advertisers must be certified under Google’s Gambling and games policy and meet the requirements for the locations they target. The update excludes advertisers promoting online gambling content who are not subject to mandatory state or national gambling registration requirements.
Google said all online gambling ads must continue to comply with its broader Gambling and games policy, as well as applicable legal, jurisdictional and age restrictions. The announcement does not specify which markets will be eligible for the expanded Masthead placement.
The move opens up access to a high-profile ad format that has traditionally limited gambling-related content. Previously, sports betting was allowed under an exception in the Masthead rules. The latest update expands eligibility to certified online gambling advertisers.
